What is RVR?

RVR is an all-terrain tank that’s simple to get started, ready to drive, and designed for customization. Built for hackers, educators, and students, RVR is the ultimate canvas for your creativity.

How do you pronounce the name?

“R-V-R” or “Rover”. Up to you!

Last updated: February 19, 2019 05:08

I know nothing about robots can I still use RVR?

YES! - That is the beauty of RVR - you can use it even if you’ve never written a line of code in your life and you can grow with it over time.

What is the battery key?

In order to make this available to the broadest age range, we had to “lock” the battery with a key. We designed a cute little RVR key, but no worries if you misplace it, a simple coin can open the battery compartment.

In the videos, are people driving the robots or are they autonomous?

Both. The robots were programmed to drive in the video, but the robots can also be driven manually with a joystick from the Sphero EDU app just like all of our other robots.

What is the biggest difference between RVR and other tank robots?

The control system - most robots in this price range have no control system or an open loop, meaning the control system isn’t adapting to the environment. RVR adapts and does its best to stay on target so you can program the robot to drive 10 feet and turn left 13º and go two more feet - and it will - over most terrain.

Will you actually ship this robot?

We’ve shipped over 4M robots - we will get this one out the door, rest assured.

Last updated: February 19, 2019 05:08

Can I buy this in stores when it comes out?

Yes, but you will pay $50 more and Kickstarter backers will get their RVRs first. Plus, on Kickstarter, you’ll get some fun exclusive add-ons!

Last updated: February 19, 2019 05:08

How much weight can RVR carry?

We are still figuring it all out because these are prototype units - but at least 2 pounds - perhaps more. We’ll update this once we have tested with molded parts vs. 3d printed parts.

Will this work with Android / iOS / Microsoft / Mac / Linux?

It will work with all platforms supported by Sphero EDU app. Or you can plug in your own computer and communicate with the robot via UART - so if you want to use an Apple ][ you can!

Last updated: February 19, 2019 05:08

What is UART?

UART is a way to communicate with the native commands on the robot through a wired connection that resembles a serial interface.

Last updated: February 19, 2019 05:08

Is UART easy to use?

Yes! You only need to hook up 4 pins: Power, Ground, TX, and RX to start talking to RVR

Last updated: February 19, 2019 05:08

Is RVR fragile?

No, it’s as rugged as a 1970s lumberjack.

Last updated: February 19, 2019 05:08

IS RVR waterproof?

No. But we took measures to minimize the impact of moisture on the system.

Last updated: February 19, 2019 05:08

How long will it take to charge the battery?

2-3 hours depending on the unique charging block you use.

Last updated: February 19, 2019 05:08

Can I get an extra battery?

Yes- we’ll be offering additional batteries for purchase with RVR

Last updated: February 19, 2019 05:08

Will RVR work with my other Sphero EDU programs?

Yep- RVR works out of the box with the Sphero EDU app and will be compatible with most BOLT programs. (Minus the matrix)

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
